Weapons in the Workplace

Effective January 1, 2023, Alabama law regarding firearms in public is amended to permit individuals to carry a concealed firearm without a permit. The amended law also prohibits employers from banning firearms in employer-owned parking lots.

Unemployment Benefits

Also effective on January 1, 2023, is a new policy for Alabama Unemployment Claims. The policy requires employees that are receiving unemployment benefits to perform three work search contacts each week which must be documented.

Policy change: PUMP ACT

Starting from April 28, 2023, employers are required by law to provide reasonable break time and a private space for employees to pump breast milk. Failure to do so may result in legal or equitable actions being taken against the employer under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). This provision aims to protect the rights and health of nursing mothers in the workplace, ensuring that they are given the necessary support to continue providing breast milk for their babies. It is important for employers to understand and comply with this new regulation to avoid any potential legal consequences.
