Voting Leave Guidelines for Employers

October 14, 2024

With election season approaching, employers and employees must be aware of your State’s voting leave laws. Understanding these guidelines helps ensure everyone has the opportunity to participate in the democratic process while maintaining workplace compliance.

In Alabama, employers are required to provide registered voters with up to one unpaid hour off to vote in a primary or general election, as long as the employee gives reasonable notice. However, if an employee’s work shift starts at least two hours after the polls open or ends at least two hours before they close, the employer is not obligated to grant voting leave.  Ala. Code § 17-1-5.
